Welcome  to Ishtia

ishtia (v) to begin, start (to do something)

Away from the bustling city, on a quiet street in the bayside town of Kemah, stands “Ishtia,” a unique indigenous restaurant. It’s more than just a place to eat; it’s a sanctuary of food, culture, and community. The exterior, with hand-painted trees, attracts curious and intrigued visitors.

Inside, guests are transported to a different world. The scent of mesquite and sage mingles with the rich aroma of roasted corn and smoked meats. The walls are adorned with tapestries, pottery, and artifacts from various indigenous people. Soft, rhythmic drumbeats play in the background, creating a warm and reverent atmosphere.

Ishtia is the creation of Chef David Skinner, a Choctaw tribal member, inspired by his ancestors' stories. His vision was to offer a space where people could experience indigenous culture through food and storytelling. He believes every dish has a story, and at Ishtia, those stories come to life.

The tasting menu showcases the diversity and richness of indigenous cuisine, featuring dishes from various indigenous peoples. Each dish is made with traditional ingredients and a blend of traditional and modern gastronomic techniques. The menu includes ingredients indigenous to North and South America and some colonial imports, illustrating how these elements transformed cultures and influenced the destinies of indigenous peoples.

  • Our tasting menu is $239 per person plus a 20% living wage charge and tax. Gratuity is appreciated but not expected. Wine pairings are available to compliment the dinner at various levels.
